If you are wondering where we got the name, we must credit our boys, Reilly and Finn for that. They're the ones that pointed out that the letters in ‘TRIO’ scrambled up spell ‘RIOT’. Just another way to make a blend!
The RIOT is our first ever red wine blend and we are delighted with the results. This wine is a blend of Sangiovese, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, and arguably it may be an unusual combination, but we've never stood on tradition here at Trio!

2006 Syrah / Walla Walla Valley

Alcohol: 14.3%
100% Single-Vineyard Syrah
Rizzuti Vineyard
Cooperage: Aged in a mixture of seasoned and neutral French and American Oak.

Retail price: $26.00 bottle
The longer we make wine, the more we become interested in the merits of bottling single-vineyard wines. Luckily for us, Walla Walla is dotted with small, family-run vineyards like Rizzuti's block out on Langdon Road. The Syrah that comes off this block is deep and rich, complex beyond its' years. It is classic Walla Walla Syrah and easily takes its' place with the other great Syrah vineyards in the Valley. The wine is the real deal, filled to the cork with brambly, dark fruit. - D.S.

2007 Zinfandel / Wahluke Slope

Release date: 4/1/09
Alcohol: 14.8%
100% Single-Vineyard Zinfandel
Pheasant Vineyard
Cooperage: Aged in 50% new American Oak and 50% neutral French Oak. Total production: 97 cases
Retail price: $26.00 bottle
Winemaking is really all about matching grape varities with the perfect soil, climate and site location for premium grape production and we have a match! Zinfandel thrives in the hot, dry climate and loess soils of the Wahluke Slope and Milbrandt's Pheasant Vineyard. This is the same great fruit we processed for our 2006 production but we took a slightly different approach and went 100% Zin rather than blend in Mourvedre. The fruit came in with unique flavors this particular harvest that we wanted to preserve, even though we picked earlier. This translates into dense fruit flavors and lower alcohol which we think you will really appreciate. - D.S.

The wine is undeniably lush with some very alluring and unusual flavors and aromatics that we think you’ll love. The nose is a mixture of berries and pepper spice along with floral characteristics. On the palate the wine is much darker, like a tobacco and espresso-wrapped chocolate. This is a subtle, smooth wine, not dissimilar to Merlot in texture. And, if our plan succeeds, the aromas will draw you in and lull you into a state of happiness with a complex and alluring bouquet. Perfume in a glass! Try this with mild meats or strong cheeses. Or, ladies, put some behind your ear. What the hell!

Tempranillo is a great example of the kind of wine that fulfills our evil plan to expand your wine-tasting palate. The Spanish native has adapted well to our warm climate and challenging soils. This Tempranillo fruit came from the Les Collines vineyard in the eastern foothills of Walla Walla. We blended in small amounts of Carménère and Sangiovese to add aromatic accents and some mouth-watering acidity. We hope you fall in love with Tempranillo the same way we did.

People visiting tasting rooms probably get tired of hearing “great wine is made in the vineyard.” But it’s really true! A very appealing factor in this particular block of Mourvèdre is that it’s grown on land that has never been farmed before. This is the ultimate pairing - a beautiful varietal that expresses old-world characteristics grown on land that has never been cultivated. The vineyard sits at 1300 feet above the Yakima Valley floor, a perfect place to slowly ripen in the sun.
We aged the hell out of this wine. As anxious as we were to get it in the bottle, every time we tasted it was obvious that the wine wasn’t quite ready. We ended up aging this single-vineyard Mourvèdre for 20 months in a mixture of new and seasoned barrels before lightly filtering and hand-bottling. We are proud that this is one of the first single-varietal bottlings of Mourvèdre released from Washington State.
This is a wine that bridges the flavor gap between Syrah and Malbec while being food-friendly and something new for your palate. Please experience our Mourvèdre as we intended. Pair it with succulent meats or game. Above all, remember that this is wine that is meant to be enjoyed with others! (D.S.)
