New 2011 Mourvèdre / Yakima Valley

This particular block of Mourvedre is owned and farmed by Art Den Hoed and is grown on land that was never farmed prior to planting the vineyard. Sitting 1400 feet above the Yakima Valley floor tucked high up on a south slope of the Rattlesnake Hills Mountains; the Far Away Vineyard is a perfect place to slowly ripen fruit in the hot summer sun and is a spot where the risk of an early freeze is seldom experienced.

A multi-gold award winner each year, our 100% Mourvedre is rapidly becoming the all time favorite within our current line-up. This is our fifth vintage and we’re confident it will continue to please! Once more commonly known as a blending grape (think Châteauneuf-du-Pape), Mourvedre is now recognized as an incredibly versatile and food friendly single varietal wine. Whether enjoying alone or paired with your favorite food, this wine bridges the flavor gap between the familiar spicy characteristics of a bold Syrah and the fruitful acidity of an Argentinean Malbec.

Nicely pairs with most grilled or braised meats, game or even a homemade stew. Wonderful with double layer dark chocolate cake as an after dinner reward.

New 2011 Grenache / Yakima Valley

Our third vintage of 100% Grenache; and one of two of our varieties quickly becoming the preferred summer red within our line-up. One of the more versatile red grapes in the world, Grenache thrives in southern France as well as Spain (where it is known as Gamacha), and is usually recognized as a ‘partner’ varietal within the more commonly known Rhone style blends (think Chateauneuf-du-Pape).

Our block of Grenache within the Far Away Vineyard sits at 1400 feet above the Yakima Valley floor of the Rattlesnake Hills Mountains within the AVA. Tucked high on a south-east facing slope, this spot provides the perfect conditions for air flow needed on a long hot summer day of ripening in the sun before setting into a cool summer evening.

Not your “common place” red, Grenache still packs a powerhouse punch of pepper and spice with its middleweight mouth feel and style, yet delivers bright acid and just ooooozes fruit flavors. Well balanced with soft tannins, this is a perfect pairing with smoked salmon, a grilled Cornish game hen or even a special spicy cuisine. A pairing with dark chocolate-raspberry cake provides for a very special after dinner delight!

New 2010 Sangiovese / Walla Walla Valley

Okay, we’ll admit to being slightly obsessive about Sangiovese. We just love to share the pleasures of this wine with everyone and convince them that this light-colored, medium-body wine, native to Tuscany, is truly the equal of Cabernet and Syrah on the world stage. Not that this is an easy task – we have been inundated in the wine press with the propaganda that good wine must be dark in color, full bodied and full of tannins. Sangiovese is the opposite of all that and that’s precisely what makes it so good!

Walla Walla has a great climate for Sangiovese with our long, hot summer days and cool evenings. This release is a 100% single varietal (yes, all Sangio all the way) Sangiovese that blends two of our favorite Walla Walla vineyard sites. Starting with an 80% foundation of the VCR16 Brunello clone that comes from the Mission Hills vineyard owned and farmed by Mike Locati, a long time resident and farmer from the multi-generational Walla Walla Italian Locati family. The vineyard is located in the hills south of the historic Whitman Mission, and produces a very different style Brunello clone than our reserve block located in the Yakima Valley Boushey vineyard. The fruit is dark, with brooding intensity, not unlike an Italian film star. Then, we blended 20% Sangiovese from the Morrison Lane vineyard owned and farmed by the esteemed Dean Morrison of Walla Walla. This vineyard was one of the earlier Sangiovese vineyards planted and the fruit typically has higher natural acids and gives you that bright cherry fruit and palate grabbing acidity we expect in a good Sangio. Together, these two vineyards provide a fruit for a delicious and versatile wine full of cherry fruit, notes of leather and rich ripe tomatoes. Pairs well with brick oven pizza, spice rub lamb, or a classic minestrone soup.

2011 Carmenere / Red Mountain

Once known as “the lost grape” of Bordeaux, Carmenere is now a varietal very much in demand, and what a treat this vintage is! The Red Mountain area is one of our favorite areas for fruit because it’s known for grapes that are both high in sugar as well as acidity, an exceedingly rare and desirable trait for wine production. This block of fruit is in the Heart of the Hill Vineyard owned by Scott Williams of Kiona Vineyards, and is a small 5 acres parcel with fine silty sandy soils superior for drainage. A single varietal (100%, no blending!) and from a single vineyard (all the fruit came from the same vineyard) making this a great testament to not only the Red Mountain area but the fine vineyard (and owner) as well!

Semi opaque ruby color with seductive aromas of blueberries, blackberry, cassis, mulberry and cedar. Lavish and pervasive flavors with a rich patina of dark fruits on the palate, interwoven with licorice, cola, and Red Mountain earth and minerality. The seduction continues on the back with sensations of gently squeezed berries, kirsch liqueur, crème de cassis and dried orange peel. A final sweetish thrust of blueberry and currant juices is followed by a lingering, lightly spiced and nutted finish. Medium tannin finish.

Great foods for pairing would be roast lamb, game, grilled duck, roast beef, pork loin, pasta with meat sauce, or most spicy foods.

2011 Tempranillo / Les Collines Vineyard•Walla Walla Valley

The fruit for this Spanish beauty comes from the esteemed Les Collines Vineyard in Walla Walla. Known for its minimal input farming practices and internationally certified as a Sustainable Farming and Salmon Safe Vineyard, it is one of the higher vineyards in the Walla Walla Valley with an upper level elevation of 1,380 feet. We are very excited to have this block of Tempranillo to call our own! Originating as a native in Northern Spain and widely cultivated as far south as La Mancha, it is now the main grape used in Rioja and is often referred to as Spain’s noble grape. A wildly diverse food-pairing wine and often blended, we chose instead to put the grape and the vineyard “on the stage” with a single varietal, single vineyard vintage.

Deep garnet colored, this wine emits a sultry nose of black cherry, black currant, leather, juniper berry and Spanish lavender. Scents of black roses, coffee bean, tobacco, anise and incense followed by Les Collines loess minerality. On the back, emerge sweet roasted berries and walnuts, sandalwood, dried orange peel, followed by a lingering sweet-dry tannin finish.

Easy food pairings would include chili rellenos, tacos, nachos, pizza or lasagna (think tomato-based sauces), paella, ravioli with mushroom tournedos Rossini, grilled venison or even your favorite Cajun dish! A great cheese pairing would be Manchego.

2009 Sangiovese

2009 Sangiovese / Yakima Valley

Being serious Sangiovese lovers ourselves, we take great pride and pleasure in hand crafting this Walla Walla Italian beauty.   Lighter in color than the broody Brunello clone we harvest in Yakima Valley, our Walla Walla Sangiovese is a beautiful marriage between two of our favorite vineyards sites: Cockburn Vineyard farmed by Cecil Zerba located at the far-east corner of the Walla Walla AVA, and the Morrison Lane vineyard farmed by the estimable Dean Morrison.  By bringing together the dark intense fruit from one, and the bright acid and bracing black cherry fruit from the other, this Sangio screams out like a Vespa ripping through the hills of old world Siena! Together they send a message: Sangiovese is back and Walla Walla is where it’s at!

Dark garnet red in color with notes of fresh cut wood on the nose, this Italian beauty delivers plenty of sweet leather and black cherry flavors, followed by a hint of lavender on the back palate.  Silky smooth in the mouth with a whisper of chocolate on the finish makes this a versatile wine for food pairing.  Try a bottle with a flat bread Margarita-style pizza, or an Italian Caprice salad, or even a perfect piece of smoked Salmon hot off the grill!
